About blood sugar monitoring

Who should check blood sugar?¹

All people with diabetes should regularly check their blood sugar levels. Your doctor or healthcare provider may provide advice specific to you.

Generally, people who may benefit the most from checking blood sugar regularly include those:

taking insulin.
who are pregnant.
having a hard time reaching their blood sugar targets.
having low blood sugar levels.
having low blood sugar levels without the usual warning signs.
who have ketones from high blood sugar levels.

Why should I monitor my blood sugar?

Blood sugar monitoring provides important information about how well your current diabetes treatment plan is working. It helps you and your healthcare provider whether any changes are needed to better manage your condition.

At what time should I perform blood sugar monitor readings?

The ideal time to check blood sugar levels may vary based on your personal treatment plan. Always consult your healthcare provider.

Common recommended times include²:

After waking up (fasting)
Before meals
1-2 hours after meals
Before sleeping

What is the target range for blood sugar?

Your ideal blood sugar target is unique to you and can change over the course of your life depending on the situation. Consult your doctor to help decide the target range ideal for you.

As a general reference, the American Diabetes Association suggests the following targets for most nonpregnant adults with diabetes¹:

This may vary depending on factors such as age, cardiovascular conditions, or other risk factors.

What should I do if my blood sugar readings fall outside of my target range?

If your blood sugar levels fall below your target range, follow your healthcare provider’s instructions. As a general reference, the American Diabetes Association states that low blood sugar is when your blood sugar levels fall below 70 mg/dl.³

As a general recommendation, consume 15 grams of a simple carbohydrate (such as a tablespoon of sugar or half a cup of juice) and check your blood sugar again after 15 minutes. Repeat this until your readings fall within your target range.³

If your blood sugar levels are higher than your target range, consult your healthcare provider to make adjustments to your diabetes treatment plan.

What should I do when I first get my meter?

Press and hold the S button to enter the set-up menu. From here you can set the date and time as well as the limits for low blood sugar and high blood sugar readings.

For more detailed instructions on setting up your meter, refer to the user manual included with your meter.

Why is the screen blank after inserting a test strip into my meter?

If your meter screen remains blank:

Check that the strip has been inserted correctly.
Ensure that the correct type of test strip is being used.
Check if the battery is inserted correctly. Replace the battery if needed.

How can I view my previously saved readings?

After turning on the system, use the ▶ and ◀ buttons to scroll through your previously saved results.

What are control tests for?

A control test ensures that the meter and test strips are working correctly and giving accurate results. For more information, please contact your healthcare provider.

Meter Maintenance

How do I clean or disinfect my meter?

Use a soft cloth or tissue to wipe the meter exterior. If necessary, a small amount of alcohol may be applied using the soft cloth or tissue. embecta offers alcohol swabs that can be used for this purpose.

Do not use organic solvents, such as acetone, or household and industrial cleaners as these may cause irreparable damage to your meter.

Test Strips

Can I use a different brand of test strips?

No, the emVia Pro blood glucose meter is a precision device and has been specifically designed to work with emVia Pro blood sugar test strips, having enhanced GFH-FAD enzyme technology. Using a different brand of test strips may provide inaccurate results.

How do I remove the test strips

emVia Pro features a simple, hands-free ejection system. It allows for hygienic and convenient test strip removal without the need for direct contact. Slide down the test strip ejector located below the S button to eject your inserted test strip.

What happens if I use expired test strips with my meter?

Using expired test strips can produce inaccurate results.

Can I re-use test strips?

No, test strips are single-use and should be disposed of after each use.

How should I store the test strips?

Store unused test strips in their original vial or foil packet to avoid damage or contamination.

Store the vial or foil packet in a cool and dry place between 1–30 °C and 10–90 % relative humidity. Do not freeze.
