BD pen needles and insulin syringes are now part of embecta, a global diabetes care company.

In an effort to provide the right level of focus in the diabetes space, BD spun-off their diabetes care business into a new company, embecta. This allows embecta the room to specialise in the diabetes market both with the pen needles and insulin syringes that are provided today, while focusing on developing new and innovative solutions that will support the lives of people with diabetes going forward.

BD pen needles and insulin syringes are now part of embecta. BD continues to sell other medical devices outside of the diabetes care space. For the past few years, embecta has been selling BD pen needles and insulin syringes. At this time, these products are being transitioned to new embecta packaging. Rest assured, you will continue to receive the same quality products, just with a new look. 

embecta is a different company to BD, and as part of that transition, we need to brand the products as embecta. The embecta branded products are the same products, with the same manufacturing and quality, just brought to you now by embecta.

The packaging design of our products is changing. We will have a new look that represents the embecta brand, but the products are the same products you know and trust.

For pen needles, the colour of the box will remain the same. For insulin syringes, you will notice a change to the colour of the box. The change of colour for insulin syringes was done in an effort to align the colour of the syringe boxes to the needle length. For 6mm syringes, the colour is orange, for 8mm insulin syringes the colour is blue, and for 12.7mm it is pink.

For both pen needle and insulin syringes, you will notice that the product brand name no longer includes BD, so look for ‘Ultra-Fine™’ or 'Micro-Fine™'.

No, our manufacturing process and the materials used have not changed. Our products are made in the same facilities and undergo the same quality control procedures at embecta as they did under BD.

For pen needles, the colour of the box will not change.

For insulin syringes, the box colour will change. To move forward with consistency, we have shifted our packaging so that the colours on the insulin syringe boxes align with needle length. For example, an 8mm syringe product will be in a blue box no matter if it is a 0.3ml, 0.5mL or 1mL barrel size. The barrel size is clearly called out on the box so both needle length and barrel size can be easily identified.

As these are the same products, patients will not need a new prescription when getting a refill.

BD products that will now be part of embecta include the following:

- Pen needles (Ultra-Fine™, Micro-Fine™)

- Insulin Syringes (Ultra-Fine™)

- Safety Pen Needle (AutoShield Duo™)

BD SafetyGlide™ Insulin Syringes will continue to be sold by embecta, but there will be no changes to the labelling or packaging at this time. You will continue to see BD on the SafetyGlide™ insulin syringes.

While the packaging of our products will have a new look that represents the embecta brand, the products are the same you know and trust. For over 100 years, we’ve been accelerating the journey to a better injection experience.^§ From the development of the first insulin syringe to now offering a broad portfolio of injection delivery products, we are determined to advance what’s next in diabetes care. We’re excited to take this step in our journey as we shift to embecta-specific packaging and look forward to continuing to provide solutions that help people with diabetes around the world.

No. embecta products will continue to be subsidised by the NDSS just as BD products were. The NDSS code will remain the same.

No. BD branded products remain viable until the respective expiry date printed on the package. BD branded products should be depleted or sold through before starting on embecta branded products. (First-in, First-out method). embecta will not credit nor take back BD branded products. We expect that retailers will have both BD and embecta branded products on the shelves for a period of time.
